Our Mission

No shared standards define what it means for a frontier AI company to operate safely enough, even as the industry acknowledges the potentially catastrophic stakes.

Guidelight is a new, independent nonprofit, founded by Page Hedley and Steven Adler (both ex-OpenAI safety leaders), that works with independent experts, AI companies, and the public to define important safety practices and promote their adoption.

AI companies currently underinvest in safety, wary of falling behind less-cautious competitors. Our strategy is to fix these incentives and to focus companies' efforts on the safety practices that matter most.

We have three complementary programs:

1.

Standards

We pair safety principles with the concrete practices that operationalize them, synthesizing existing research, expert input, and our own expertise.

2.

Assessments

We evaluate companies' current practices against these standards and publish the results, drawing on public information, credible reporting, and company disclosures.

3.

Incentives

We drive company adoption of safer practices, supporting safety-minded staff internally and building competitive pressure from customers, investors, and the public.

Channeling the public interest into companies' safety decisions requires independence from those companies. Guidelight accepts no funding from AI companies or their staff.

Our vision is a commercial environment where it pays to be safe, where the interests of AI companies and the public are aligned.
